Young supporter gets eggcited

September 2, 2007

by Vincent Laport

Vinient, a young boy,
Vincent gives one of his feathered friends a treat.

Today, I went to see the chickens that give me and my family eggs*. They live at the Lighthouse Sanctuary Farm. They are very colorful, run around and make a lot of noise. These chickens lay only good cholesterol eggs, unlike the chickens in those awful CAFO’s [or factory battery caged hens]. CAFO chickens have no living space. They can’t even turn around! Their eggs have higher levels of bad cholesterol than eggs from chickens who can run around. The Sanctuary Farm chickens have space and freedom. They eat what they want. CAFO chickens can only eat what they are fed. When I eat a CAFO egg, I think “yuck.” But when I eat an egg from the Sanctuary Farm, I think “yum!.” I love eating omelets for breakfast, and it was fun to meet the chickens who lay the eggs to make them. Thank you, Dick, for showing me around.

* Note from our director: The eggs produced at the Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary are a by-product of hens rescued from abuse or neglect situations. Often these eggs are donated to churches or other organizations. We do not sell eggs, nor promote the selling of any animal product. Donations are gladly accepted.
