Summer Solstice 2006:

Visitors enjoy a day with the animals

Despite the heat of the day, we enjoyed an afternoon of entertainment and fun during the Summer Solstice Celebration at the Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary.

The sheep shearing demonstration was very interesting, and now all the sheep are ready for the hot summer weather. The sheep shearer gently handled the animals, and we bagged the beautiful wool. DJ and Amanda produced a gorgeous black and gray wool, while the others created the lanolin filled white wool. Richard Long, one of our board members, had the opportunity to try his skill at sheering must to the amusement of those watching.

Eartha, the Ecological Clown, painted faces for anyone who wished to have a design on their face, so there were lizards, rainbows and smiles on many faces.

The tractor for the hay rides broke down at the last minute, but we attached the trailer to a truck for rides around the upper pasture and out to where the llamas and goats were grazing.

We now have two murals painted to brighten up the farm. Jason Kramer drew the picture and our volunteer painters did an excellent job of adding color.

Many of the animals were trying to escape the hot weather, but they were around to feed, pet, and soak up any attention they could get.

We had fun socializing, caring for the animals and making memories at the Farm.
